BAHAMAS - FIELD UPDATES - WEEK 3

The Week That Was- Week 3, Phase 23 28th April-5th May 2007

Jackie Elder

This week was a great week for diving. Everyone finished their Open Water qualifications and is now working on becoming Advanced Open Water divers. Some of us also had the most exciting dive experience yet when we were in the water with a shark!! We had just descended to the bottom of the site when we glanced up and saw the shark a few metres away; then when it turned we realized that it was a Hammerhead. The natural reaction of just about everyone in the water was to huddle together in hopes that we wouldn’t be the one the shark saw. Soon after we realized what it was, it swam away and we continued our deep dive which was a lot of fun.

Besides diving, we have all been working on learning all of the different fish species found in the area so we can start surveying, which involved playing some games as well. On our dives we started fish spotting and trying to find and identify the fish we have learned.

We went to the school as usual and taught the kids about Nassau Grouper. Some of us are also working on some new playground equipment which will be exciting to put in. today is Saturday and we are all looking forward to this evening after spending some of the day learning dive theory and fish species. Last weekend we had a heroes and villains party where costumes ranged from Homer Simpson to Mr. Muscle.
