BAHAMAS - FIELD UPDATES - WEEK 2

The Week That Was- Week 2, Phase 23 22nd-27th April 2007

Erin McFadden and Sue Bull

Saturday

Saturday night was our first party night. It was Kate’s birthday so there was a ‘K’ themed party. Some of the fancy dress included a kite, a king, 2 knights and a ‘Kool Aid’!! After a fun filled Saturday night fuelled by coconut rum and local beer ‘Kalik’, most were asleep (in a variety of places) by 3-4 am.

Sunday

We woke up on Sunday morning to delicious pancakes. Sunday was spent sunbathing and relaxing.

Monday

On Monday, the pre-qualifieds finished off their Open Water dive theory and exam. The qualifieds did invertebrate science followed by a snorkel out at Calabash Island, where we saw a stingray and the invasive lionfish- one of which Kate managed to spear.

Tuesday

On Tuesday the pre-quals finished off their confined dives in a pool at Sheila’s- a hotel and restaurant where burgers were lovingly scoffed during breaks. The qualified divers had coral science followed by a Mangrove walk, which took us up to Sheila’s via an ice cream shop!!

Wednesday

On Wednesday morning Joe was taken to see the doctor due to a swollen head- it turned out to be mosquito bite overload. The pre-quals couldn’t do their open water dives due to the wind, but the qualifieds got out for a short snorkel on Pigeon Island. Wednesday afternoon was spent preparing for our first school visit.

Thursday

Unfortunately on Thursday the wind was still too strong to dive but everyone got out on the boat for a snorkel. The qualifieds went to Calibash where they saw a nurse shark. At 12:30 we all got in the van and went along to the local school where we were teaching the children about Queen Conch. Others were helping with the school’s computers and some were planning new equipment for the playground. We had a quiz night in the evening that involved sand castle competitions in the dark and Texas Hold-em.

Friday

Today everyone got out on a dive. The pre-quals doing an open water dive and the qualifieds doing a habitat dive involving coral I.D. The clay-oven is currently broken (collapsed) so instead of bread rolls and eggs it was flat bread with eggs today.
