BAHAMAS - FIELD UPDATES - WEEK 8

The Week That Was- Week 8, Phase 23  12th to 17th June 2007

Sean Crowley

With everybody having passed their underwater fish tests, (every volunteer had to correctly identify 50 fish underwater), it’s been a hardcore week of diving and we got three dives in on both Monday and Tuesday.
Wednesday was an intense day of diving with four dives after which everyone was exhausted!! Joe and Erin also had a particularly good day, seeing a massive Sea Turtle. By midweek, most people had completed their first survey dive with a member of staff checking on the data collected during the dive.
On Thursday everyone had started collecting scientific data from survey dives and logging it. A few of the volunteers saw a massive nurse shark in the water, which caused a couple of people to go through their air a bit quickly!! The weather prevented any more than two dives on Friday after which a few of the volunteers went to hunt Lionfish (an invasive species found in the Bahamas). Edd successfully speared one, but Joe sadly managed to lose it from the bucket.
Today, Saturday, we had a fun dive and went down to 30 metres to view the drop off to the tongue of the ocean, a place beyond the barrier reef where an underwater cliff drops from 35metres to 6000ft!! (an impressive sight)
Later, after lunch, we had camp clean to clean everything up for the next week, a task which included a poo pit dig and ‘bin’ change (eeeww). Later on tonight there will be plenty of drinks and games when the nights entertainment begins for the camp party. Sunday will, no doubt, need to be put aside as a day of relaxation and recovery from the nights festivities!!
