BAHAMAS - FIELD UPDATES - WEEK 1
The Week That Was… Mon Jan 22nd to Fri Jan 26th 2007
Samantha Dickerson and Lisa Baldock
The few days before you get on the flight are so busy and manic there isn’t the time to even think about the fact you are about to spend the next ten weeks in paradise. Finally getting on the flight is such a relief because you know you have nothing left to worry about: and what you’ve left behind, you have to live without. Trust us, you’ll bring far more than you need anyway.
The arrival into Andros goes a small way to preparing you for the beauty of the island. The azure waters and the blue holes are breath-taking. The Greenforce welcome at the airport was incredibly friendly – they seemed as excited that we had arrived as we were.
When you arrive on camp the first thing you notice is the ocean, then an enormous grin spreads across your face as you realise you will be spending the next ten weeks here, in paradise. No more getting up for work every morning, no more traffic jams, so sleet, snow hail or freezing temperatures. Just sunshine and warmth.
Then you actually notice the camp, which is very well organised and far less basic than you’d imagine. It feels like home immediately. The first couple of days you spend getting to know everyone and finding out why they are here, getting to know how the camp works: what chores need doing and when everyone is doing what!
For the unqualified divers, the first couple of days are spent getting accustomed to the cheesy but easy PADI way of learning. Once that’s out of the way, the fun can REALLY begin!
It’s only out third day into the phase and the atmosphere in camp is very friendly and everyone has a single purpose: to get in the water and get diving. It looks so beautiful and enticing; the camp staff keep telling us how amazing the reefs are that we just can’t wait to see for ourselves.
