BAHAMAS - FIELD UPDATES - WEEK 2

The Week That Was… Saturday Jan 27th 2007 – Fri Feb 2nd 2007

John Arthur and Jack Millington

Saturday

We had pancakes which was a real treat.  It was a relaxing day on the decking and around camp. In the evening we celebrated our first weekend on camp with a barbequed feast of, chicken, deep fried fish and chips and, in honour of Ele’s birthday we had and ‘E’ themed party.  Elephants, Electric shocks, Elevators and Experts all came out to play and much merriment ensued.

Sunday

Everyone nursed their headaches quietly around camp until John and Rose were followed home from their run by a local dog.  The dog, named ‘Nails’ by us (real name Jack) beat us all at American football (by destroying the ball!) and then proceeded to chase the camp cat up a tree before being driven home to his owner.

Monday

After some slight technical difficulties and a bit of excercise pushing the boat home through the shallows, we experienced our first taste of Cheese Monday Madness and the cheese dreams brought on by a fresh bread feast topped with cheddar (the luxury!)
The qualified divers got an introductory dive in while the expectant learner divers ploughed through their theory.

Tuesday

The newbies got their first diving experience today, in the shallows just off camp.  Meanwhile the qualified divers began their coral and invertebrate identification training with Kate, our camp scientist.

Wednesday

We went to a local swimming pool so that the learners could do their confined water skills dives and the qualified divers got to practice their buoyancy control.  Tuna sandwich picnicking by the pool kept everyone going and we all achieved a lot in one day!

Thursday

In the morning we drove to Captain Bill’s Blue Hole, where there was a large diving platform.  Everyone showed off their skills, most notably Alex tackling Danny off the high board.  In the afternoon the learners completed and passed their final written exam.

Friday

The boat if now fixed, according to ‘Bahamas Time’, and weather permitting, we’ll be able to get out and start diving in the open water tomorrow! Can’t wait.
