BAHAMAS - FIELD UPDATES - WEEK 3
The week that was: 3
by Rose Filler
It’s the beginning of February and yet here I am soaking up the sun on an idyllic beach, a moment topped off by the manliest man lugging an entire tree to the woodpile in anticipation of Saturday night’s bonfire. Half of camp is diving while the rest of us bask, waiting our turn to go out on the most gorgeous of dive days.
The weather at the beginning of the week gave no indication of such glory. After Roger provided an in-camp pancake parlor on Sunday to ease us into the day following Saturday’s funmaking. The weather slowly turned and Monday greeted us with rain. Never bogged down by weather, we were soon busy learning about Marine Habitats and Marine Protected Areas in lectures from Kate. By Wednesday we were diving again, and all the more excited as we spotted the fish we had just been learning about.
Thursday proved particularly exciting. After ending a dive being eyed casually by a barracuda, we went to Stafford Creek Elementary School to provide pretty much the only instruction in marine biology the kids there get. Splitting into groups we taught the kids about marine habitats, and they partook with enthusiasm. We then headed out to play sport with them for an hour. Today (Friday) the weather has improved and we are basking in the sunshine looking forward to pleasure diving tomorrow!
