BAHAMAS - FIELD UPDATES - WEEK 5
The Week That Was… Feb 17th – Feb 23rd
by Andy Voskhul
On Saturday we had our weekly pleasure dive, but this time it was a special treat! We were kindly invited down to Coral Caverns and took a dive at a site called the Labyrinth. It was amazing to see the difference in the coral structures and the fish in just a small dricve down the coast! Plus, you’ll never hear us grumbling about the night in a nice bed, hot showers and a deep fry treat of a meal either!!
Sunday was a relaxing day off. A pleasantly sunny start dissolved into a duvet hugging cool afternoon, but a one off watch of a DVD picked up peoples spirits.
On Monday and Tuesday, we made the most of our time with lectures and learning. People are really doing well remembering all the different types. Some of the stories we use to remember them were pretty ‘out there’ though!!
Everybody is also using the ‘dry days’ to get ready for another trip to the local primary school. We’re excited to be building them some playground parts this phase and maybe even have a bit of a school play to reveal it at… watch this space!
The beginning of the week saw the arrival of a new camp dog, who was named Noodles after our ‘haut cuisine’ diet. After all our learning, we had an evening lecture on sharks to prepare us for a dive we would be making the next day.
Finally it came, and even better the winds finally died enough to get out and dive! Just in time, as after two work and learning dives in the morning, we tripped off to Small Hope Bay to take part on a shark dive!! Picking up the post on the way home rounded off the day with exciting (and in some cases ODD) news from home.
Thursday morning was fish pointing and habitat dives, with some of us ready to go on proper habitat surveys now! In the afternoon, we headed to Stafford Primary School, only to find it had closed due to the water supply being down. Still, we had an eye-opening stop at a local dump, where tyres for swings can be scavenged. Visiting the dump certainly makes you appreciate how important it is to recycle!
With the afternoon free, we squeezed in another dive for more fish identification, and the day was tied up with a great game of pictionary for games night/
Friday brought us some of us three dives in one morning! Followed by camp clean that’s a pretty busy day. As I write this, I figure I’ll be in for a deep sleep tonight!
