BAHAMAS - FIELD UPDATES - WEEK 8

The Week That Was Saturday 11th March  - Saturday 17th March 2007

Sarah Kendrick

SATURDAY.  In the morning we went for a pleasure dive, as Saturdays are for fun.  We looked at some beautiful fish and coral.  The afternoon was spent doing what we fancied and getting costumes ready for the ‘Cowboys and Indians’ evening that night.  It was a fun night for all, very good and interesting costumes.  It’s amazing what Jack can do with a pillow case!  He made it into a cowboy top!  There were some in combinations of half cowboy and half Indian! Helen made a great Indian head-dress out of cardboard – very inventive!

SUNDAY.  A day of rest after the hectic night of rivalry between cowboys and Indians.  There was lots of pancake eating in the morning made by myself.  First time I have ever made pancakes and I have to say they were quite nice!  The rest of the day was sunbathing, laundry time, sleeping, dreaming, then to bed for more dreaming!

MONDAY.  Weather not good enough to dive.  Too windy so the morning was spent doing mini-projects, shower building and making more costumes - this time for the school play that will be shown at the end of our phase by local school children.  The afternoon was a great surprise, as we were treated to a lesson in wood carving, taught to us by a nice man called Pete. We all sat on hand-made carving stools in a circle and watched Pete  carve a fish out  of a piece of wood.  It was amazing how he could get  a piece of wood and carve it into anything!  There was a lot of hitting and chips of wood flying in every direction.  The our turn came.  Interesting carvings were made by all!  Everyone enjoyed themselves, a good afternoon had by all.

TUESDAY.  More mini-projects, more shower building and school play preparation in the morning.  The afternoon, the staff organized a ‘scavenger hunt’ for us.  We were put into groups of 3 and 4  and given a list of random objects to find in an hour and half .  Everyone was running here, there and everywhere.  Chaos on camp! There was much fun and laughter, and some very odd items being collected by the end!  What a fun afternoon.  Enjoyed by everyone!  Tuesday night we went to Forfar, an American Field Station where we have friends.  We went to watch a self-made DVD, directed and produced by Travis, who is studying film.  By the time he got it working …  well, let’s just say it was interesting.  It was about killer raccoons.  I can see why it went straight to DVD!!

WEDNESDAY. A no dive day due to weather.  Still we had plenty to keep us busy.  Today we tried on the costumes for the school play.  Not having much experience in costume making, we did well as a team…OK maybe out Banded Butterfly Fish costume looked like someone was in jail, but what the hey!  That evening we had a great sleepover in the Trainee’s new tent.  We managed to fit about 11 or 12 of us in!!  All of us were lying next to each other on the floor, so naturally, a lot of laughter and madness ensued.  There was also a DVD treat and pillow fights!
THURDAY.  The morning was spent getting everything ready to go to school that afternoon.  At the school, we taught about coral and told them about the school play they would soon be showing to their parents!  Then an hour of playtime – the children chasing us, us chasing the children, fun and laughter had by both us and DEFINITELY by the children!  That evening everyone scoffed down pizza, kindly brought by Glen, the  expedition leader, on his return from business in Nassau.  It was amazing.  Lots of full-bellied people.  What a treat, take away pizza eat your heart out!

FRIDAY.  Finally our prayers were answered. We dived, we dived, we dived!  Wahoo! Everyone went crazy! We had missed diving so much.  The first one was a deep dive.  We saw lots of fish and some people doing Deep Diver specialities got their skills done.  The second dive was shallower but great fun.  We had running races on the sandy ocean floor.  It’s the funniest and the hardest thing to do ever!  I would hate to think what we all looked like!  Crazy people!
