BAHAMAS - FIELD UPDATES - WEEK 9

Week 9 written by Emma Jayne Dent

Saturday 17th March St Patrick’s day
Another volunteer left us today (Andy v), leaving 10 volunteers on camp.
The weather today permitted us 2 dives, the first at Fritz’s place and the second at Jeremy’s jungle, on which we were joined by Captain America who was our guide for the dive. Both dives were counted as deep dives towards our deep specialty, so now most people have completed this course.  As it was St Patrick’s Day we all dressed in something green for our trip to Colours (a local bar) in the evening where we were treated to anther amazing dance display by Marvin.

Sunday 18th march
The day started as on every Sunday with pancakes (for those who chose to get up) the sun was shining and the day was mainly spent relaxing on the decking.

Monday 19th March
The morning was spent doing our EFR review. In the afternoon we took a trip to Fresh creek, we visited the old light house and Danny bought Conch. We also visited the Androsia fabric factory and spent ages looking at the wondrous fabric created there.

Tuesday 20th March
The weather again meant that we were unable to dive, so we went north to Morgan’s Bluff, the highest point of the island, we went to explore Captain Henry Morgan’s cave and then on to the beach where we had lunch and tanned ourselves. We then drove to a blue hole and spent an hour swimming in the fresh water.

Wednesday 21st March
6 of us went to Fresh creek to help Captain America mend his boat. The rest stayed at camp and made the seesaw and swings for the school playground. As the gas ran out, and there is no gas on the island, we have gone back to basics and are cooking everything on a proper camp fire.

Thursday 22nd March
The morning was spent preparing for Saturday night “the masked ball” creating masterpieces from cardboard, paper and glue. In the afternoon we went to the school, the swings were erected and the seesaw put in place. The children rehearsed for the forthcoming play next week before be allowed to play on their new playground.

Friday 23rd March
The morning was spent cleaning the camp, in preparation for the afternoon wood carving with Pete at the old school house.
