FIJI - FIELD UPDATES - JULY

by Sarah

Hello! Sarah here to fill you in on the last two windy and action packed weeks of camp life. The beginning of the week was dominated by the arrival of our turtle expert Wences who came and talked to the Kubulau district committee. Turtle power!

Open Water training continued and was successfully completed mid-week. In the mean time, qualified divers took the opportunity of a calm day to visit Namena. The group spotted pilot whales, reef sharks and spinner dolphins, much to the jealously of the rest of diver babies!

Saturday night’s theme was the letter of your first initial – so we had Supergirl (me), Lego Lucy, and a very realistic Chav (Claire) and Muppet (Marc).

This week, whilst effectively avoiding revision for the dreaded fish test, advanced training and EFR got underway. The group’s Fiji babies grew with the surplus of cakes that arrived on ‘Ladies Night’ with the Navatu ladies. We all really enjoyed some sober Fijian dancing or should I really say some ‘taki taki’. \We also spent a day at the Kubulau district school, talking to the kids about litter dumping in the sea. Having got in touch with our creative sides in a role play (and again filling up on tea and cakes) we were put to shame on the football/volleyball front!

Last night we had a pretty Kava fuelled evening in a fundraiser at Navatu which left most of us asleep in the village. Much to my disappointment, there was no Kava high dancing! Tonight’s party night theme of ‘Anything-but-clothes-goes’ is going to be a real test of our creativity – if we can bear the windy weather…

We are all dreading Tuesday where we’ll be losing Lucy and Anna. Moce to you all and Vinaka.
