HANDS ON CONSERVATION ADVENTURE: Live with the maasai , Track the Wildlife sail the spice islands!

New: Greenforce Camp built for '08!

Sidai 'p! - Maasai for 'I'm fantastic'!

One of the phrases that you'll learn in response to Kaya-reh? (how are you?) during the first week of your African adventure.

Arriving on a Sunday, we will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and you will spend the first four/five days in Arusha. Monday mornings' welcome and safety briefing enables the whole group to settle in.

A Maasai warrior will spend the first days teaching you some basic Maasai and introducing you to their fascinating and historic culture.

By the end of the first week, with a better understanding of how to greet a Maasai elder and with an understanding of more words than just "Sidai'p" the group will have left left Arusha and head deep into the African bush and arrive at the Greenforce Research Base.

VITAL Survey of lion, elephant, giraffe, zebra, rhino, hippo FOR AWF

No sooner will you be settled into your traditional styled 'boma' than you will start carrying out the wildlife surveys Greenforce is doing in this area.

The Maasai Moran or Warriors may help teach you how to track animals, so you will soon become an expert in tracking the giraffe, elephant, lion, zebra as well as spotting the difference between a Spotted Hyena and a Blue Duiker!

The surveys are done by vehicle or on foot, with local guides, depending on the terrain and the animals involved. The data is required by the African Wildlife Foundation to implement sustainable management plans for the local people and animals to live in balance.

- Up close to the wildlife!.

you will share the MAASAI culture

In the afternoon you may also be teaching small groups of the Maasai English. Classes are informal, but the Maasai are eager to learn and will take any opportunity to practice their English with you.

You will also be encouraged by them to use as much Maasai as you can muster, so be prepared to brave a new and exciting language!

also: SERENGETI, NGOROGORO CRATER SAFARI and night climb

There is a good spectrum of wildlife from Elephant, Lion even Ostrich in our survey areas. Also, subject to survey requirements you may pile aboard the Land Rovers to venture further afield.

We head off on a 3-4 day mid phase break. This may typically include a visit to the famous Serengeti and the Ngorogoro crater.

You may also do a camel ride or a night climb of the Maasai Mountain of the Gods - Oldoinyo Legai. We climb at night so we summit at sunrise. You will see the sun rise beneath you, over the waking African landscape.

- During your mid phase break you might be tracking with the famous Wa-Hazabi tribe, canoe thru the Rift Valley or even an over night camel safari!

plus: Zanzibar - exotic Spice Islands in the Indian Ocean.

As you bid farewell to your African Base Camp you next head to Zanzibar, the Spice Islands, where you can see for yourself how the exotic Arabic influence has made Zanzibar a truly unique part of Africa.

After a night in Stone Town, you will travel to the north of the island to an amazing marine park, for three days of sailing, snorkeling, beach and barbeques.
