Like many countries, China has a demand for teachers. Unfortunately teachers around the world are often underpaid and overworked. They need help. Join us and join them. It’s one thing to travel around as a tourist, quite another to travel there with compassion and an aim to help children and adults alike improve their education. Whether you go as a paid assistant or as a volunteer, you will enjoy the programme that is laid out before you like the gourmet Chinese meals you will enjoy. It is broken down into four parts; an introduction, cultural understanding, teacher training and finally your teacher placement.

Your time teaching will be extremely rewarding. The schools are often quite open to different teaching methods as your role is to teach conversational English. You can therefore be creative and outgoing. Many of our past volunteers use songs and games to aid your students. The ages of the students range from kindergarten right through to the end of secondary school.
Discover China! Get treated by great scenery, hospitality and eager students. Teach in a fun, enthusiastic way. By the end of this project, you'll feel ready to tackle any classroom...rightfully so. Even if you have no intention of becoming a teacher, this project is a great opportunity to see a real side of China and have an amazing time.
You can add on a week or 2 of Mandarin lessons. These will take place at the start of your project. To add this fantastic opportunity to your programme, pick your desired length - one week at £700, two weeks at £1,200 - in the Extras section when booking.
While you are teaching, you will get 2 days off a week. Guilin City has a range of authentic and modern tourist attractions. It also has all the major facilities, such as bars, shops and restaurants.
Your accommodation will either be on your school site or at the project centre, which is located in Gongcheng County.
Food is included. During the day, you will eat in the school canteen. Some schools have additional cooking facilities for you to use. If you are staying in the project centre, meals are provided. Supermarkets and restaurants are usually close by if you fancy a change of scene...or cuisine.

Your first 2 weeks in China will be spent learning about the country and also how to become an effective teacher. It will be broken down into:
1. General introduction into culture, language and the region.
2. Chinese culture - learn how to make traditional dishes, understand the Chinese school system and an excursion to villages and local highlights.
3. Teaching techniques - Lessons on how to teach, plan and mark work. During this stage, you will observe how your peers do it.

• A 'meet the team' briefing day and BBQ in Central London prior to departure
• Airport pick-up on arrival
• Transfer to the teaching placement
• 2 weeks of cultural introduction and teacher training

Points to note:

Telephones - Phone cards are readily available in China to call home and the best place to go would be to an Internet cafe where international phones are usually placed. If you prefer, you can buy a SIM card when you arrive and use it for the duration.
Internet - Most schools we operate in have Internet access that you will be able to use. If not, then Internet cafes are plentiful.
China is the world fourth largest country in terms of land mass, but has the world’s largest population with 1.6 billion people.
The Chinese language does not have an alphabet, but over 40,000 characters each of which would need to be memorised.
You are expected to arrive at Guilin Airport, which is located Northwest of Hong Kong. There are two ways to get to Guilin, from either Beijing or Hong Kong.

First 2 weeks - culture and teaching learning.
After this, you will be assigned to a school, where you will work 5 days a week. The weekends will be free time, where you will be able to explore the region and relax.
